The Scene
Zuma, which means "running horse," showcases a striking red and black interior. Sleek black lacquered tables contrast sharply with red lanterns and a lipstick-red velvet bench that lines the length of the wall. For cool high-tech entertainment, small flat-screen TVs play Japanese anime films. Seats at the sushi bar offer prime views of the master chefs in action. The service, while polite, is on the slow side.
The Food
Serious sushi lovers will appreciate the chef's focus on freshness and artistry. The comprehensive menu has everything from nigiri sushi to sushi sashimi combinations. Zuma Sushi Body Piercingly Bad
I'm from Los Angeles and to some they will say, "So what." To them I say, "We know sushi." Well, actually, not all Los Angelinos know sushi, but those that do always have "their sushi place". Zuma would not be one of them. I came to Atlanta the beginning of Oct to work for 4 months and the first place I tried was Zuma with their all you can eat lunch. The rolls seemed adequate and typical -- specialty rolls wrapped in a lot of nori and rice -- not so special. For lunch time the atmosphere was empty and cavernous so also not very welcoming more like a cafeteria with accented black and red walls. While eating, Hamachi, (yellowtail, my fave) I bit into a large piece of bone. It was pretty spiky. I can deal with an occasional bone but this was not thin it was body piercing huge.
After the potential body piercing experience, I turned off from Zuma and decided I'd rather play the video game of the same name than revisit my experience at Zuma. It is a shame because I live in the apartment complex which Zuma is connected to. In the same, Inman Park, area are far superior restaurants including PaCheen, Johnie's Pizza, Across the Street, and Highland Bakery which is where I'm going to go now to get an amazing cupcake.

not fresh sushi
was there one evening and my friend and myself were the only two in sight. tuna tar tar was awesome - spicy, salty, melt in your mouth. a few of our items had not yet come out and in the quiet of the dining room i heard the beep of a microwave. out came our eel, octopus and sea bass and they had obviously come out of the microwave - some of it still frozen in the middle. i know that's the case in many sushi spots but at least keep up the image.

pretty good sushi
I am considered a "sushi snob" by friends because of how selective I am. Most people will think Zuma is the best sushi they have ever had, but I cannot agree. I will say it's pretty good, but there's better in Atlanta (although not many places). They do have a very good selection of fish, but some of their pieces are pricey. Overall I would definitely go again just because the best sushi restaurant in Atlanta is a long drive now.

Yummy sushi, good service
My husband and I went here on Wednesday night around 7:00 and it was a good experience. There was no wait at all and we were promptly seated. The service was good - they were very attentive and the sushi chef answered our questions. Food was good - I'm a novice sushi eater so I ate the flash fried California roll and a bagel roll but my husband got the big combination plate of sushi (it's like $39 bucks) and he thought it was great. They brought out our miso soup/edamame in seconds after we ordered it which I liked.
My only complaints -- when my husband ordered a 2nd beer they brought the bottle and poured it into the same glass instead of getting him a cold one. And -- they had ultimate fighting on at the sushi bar where we were eating. Not exactly appetizing!

Good, but results awful.
Not a professional reviewer myself, nor a sushi-phile, but must commend the sushi. Some of the best that my naive palate has enjoyed.
However, I was curious the moment I stepped in the door as to why the place was an absolutely barren empty and how the restaurant could turn any sort of profit on an "all-you-can-eat sushi for 15 dollars" lunch. Is it the best-kept secret in Atlanta that Zuma serves day-old (or older) sushi as their lunch course?
I cannot attest to this, but I can attest to the fact that within four hours, I needed to leave work violently ill. I drove home shaking, sweating and luckily, without staining the upholstery, but probably could not bring myself to eat at Zuma again.

I do not wish to personally cirticize a fellow critique, but i do not agree with the review underneath me. Out of all the sushi restraunts that i have been to in Atlanta, i find Zuma sushi very pleasean and enjoyable. Yes i do agree my past experiences with Zuma sushi a around a year to two years ago was unpleasant; the food was great, but the service was not up to standards; however, i dined at Zuma sushi with a couple of my friends after the new years, and i felt great improvement. They provided very good and comfortable service, and the waitress and at some times waiters were very polite and helpful. The food was once again spectacular, and the atmosphere was someplace i would love to spend a special occasion at. The only flaws i could think of would be the television near the far end of the table that i sat at near the entrance was unable to play the animation that they were showing. Overall, I would definetely recommend Zuma sushi to other people

Terrible service, decent sushi
My husband and I tried Zuma shortly after they opened, and the service was terrible, and the fish wasn't much better. We recently decided to give them another chance since they have gotten such great reviews recently. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was a strange heavy odor- almost like Clorox. Our waitress was very confused about their drink offerings. She explained, "I don't think we really do that anymore" about the drink specials listed at the front door. She spilled a decent portion of our mediocre vodka-tonics on the table as she served them, and didn't seem to notice. Our waitress disappeared shortly after we ordered, and after waiting for about 10 minutes we had to catch another waiter to ask for dishes and soy sauce after our food was served. The food itself was decent, but not any better than you can get at Rusan's for a good bit cheaper. The ginger dressing was flavorless, and the lettuce was old.
Overall, it was a disappointing experience. We spent the same amount as you would at a place like MF Sushi, but had terrible service and food that was mostly fresh but nothing spectacular. The restaurant itself was an interesting concept, although the tables were cramped and uncomfortable. There are a bunch of flat panel tvs on the wall, but they were kept on a DVD menu screen the whole time we were there with the movie title "Appleseed" flashing throughout our meal. I'm not sure if that was their intended effect, but it was quite irritating.
After two tries, I will not return to Zuma. There are too many really good sushi places in Atlanta to waste your time and money on this one.

Good, good sushi
Dear past reviewer on typed "stringy toro",
You probably misheard O-toro for their Chu-toro, since Chu-toro can contain a little bit more sinew than aforementioned O-toro, which said O-toro from MF is MOST DEFINITELY frozen, thus breaking down cell walls with improper defrosting procedures(I know how MF operates), gives you that oh-so-awesome melt-in-your-mouth feel. Even though most fish for raw consumption NEEDS to be frozen before eaten, there's one rule in japanese cuisine-YOU NEVER FREEZE TUNA, EVER!

With that off've my chest, never believe the hype of the "Top 3". So what Zuma looks like an arcade from 1995....They are an honest mom n' pop n' son operation that churns out great, buttery sushi with no strings attached(except for the occasional sinew[it happens])! Prices can be wary, but they do a better job than 96% of sushi places in Atlanta. Even better than at least 9 actual Japanese-owned places!

Not the Best, but Not Bad Either
We went to Zuma to see if it really lives up to being the best sushi restaurant in town, while sometimes the people who judge these things know a thing or two about food, I would hesitate to say if Zuma is indeed the Best in Atlanta. The service was brisk, but not haughty or slow. The couple we dined with ordered several pieces of nigiri and maki, and everything came at appropriate times. The prices on the menu seemed slightly higher than other places around town, but our total bill seemed on par, though we didn't have any sake, so that may have put us over the edge. Their miso was actually pretty good, and the kappa and avocado maki rolls I ordered were fresh and rolled precisely. Nothing seemed sloppy about any of the presentation or flavor. We did notice however that the cuts of nigiri was very generous. So, if people are complaining of price, they should also note that the fish is almost double what other restaurants serve. I would come back to Zuma if I was in the neighborhood, otherwise I'd still make the trek to my favorite sushi restaurant up on the northside, Sushi Huku.

What's all the hype?
After reading glowing reviews on here, likening Zuma to MF, I figured I'd give it a shot. It's ok sushi, but not nearly as good as MF. For example, I ordered the Otoro, which I always order at MF, and was quite dissapointed to find that instead of the "melt in your mouth" otoro I was used to, I got something a bit gristly and thin. I tried a lot of different rolls, sashimi, and nagiri and was a bit surprised to find each of these to be lacking too. It's better than most sushi in town, but about on par with Sushi Avenue in Decatur. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there again, and yes, the service is too slow to justify the trip.

I just don't get the bad reviews of Zuma. Yes the service is slow. Yes, it is purely sushi and there are no teriaki or other non-sushi dishes on the menu like there are in the cheaper places like Ru-Sans. Yes it's expensive. But the payoff is what I really think is the best sushi in Atlanta now that Soto is gone. And let's face it: Serving fish this fresh in a landlocked place like Atlanta is going to be expensive. The sushi here is far better than MF Sushi, and the atmosphere is far less pretentious and precious.

Not that great - creative new rolls, but the food and service still need improvement.
Like the previous reviewer, i've been to most of the sushi restaurants in the citysearch top 10 and i'm not sure how Zuma can be considered one of the best sushi restaurants in Atlanta. I went with my girlfriend on a thursday night. The restaurant wasn't that busy (maybe half of the tables were empty), but the service was still really slow (took a while to get the food, had to wait to get the check). There appeared to have been two servers for the whole restaurant, but they still did not manage to make it to my table often. Other than a few of the usual japanese appetizers, the menu did not offer anything other than sushi (sashimi, nigiri, maki). So if youre looking for rice dishes, youre out of luck. this isnt necessarily a bad thing, but if you are going to specialize in sushi, at least do it well. One positive is that there were a lot of different rolls i had never seen at other restaurants before. after trying a few, i now realize why other restaurants dont have it on their menus: the combinations dont work well. We ordered five different rolls to get a variety (im not a really big fan of nigiri and sashimi). The first two rolls arrived and the rice was too cold. one of the rolls had too thick of a layer of rice. (one piece in the roll didnt even have any fish in it - it was rolled unevenly). while the fish tasted fresh, the combination of flavors did not mix well (ex. for one roll, the spicy flavor overpowered the flavor of the crab/fish and all you could taste was the pepper. you could not taste the rice or fish/crab at all.). another problem: we ordered the fried calamari roll and were not told that calamari was not available until we got our first two rolls of sushi. we ordered a different roll as a substitute and did not get it until we had finished all of our other food. by the time we got it, we didnt even really want it anymore. our tab ended up being $52 (no drinks) and i was still hungry. i had to stop by micky d's to fill up

Worst Dining Experience - EVER!
I cannot believe that Zuma is considered one of the "best" sushi establishments in Atlanta. I went there Saturday night at around 9:30PM, and the staff acted as if we had walked in at closing time. Mind you, they are supposedly open until 1:00AM on Saturday evenings. I would like to point out that Zuma had only half of its tables occupied with guests, but it still took 10 minutes for a waiter to approach our table. When we finally received our food, we were VERY disappointed. First of all, we were brought a roll that we didn't even order and on top of that, it was the most bland sushi we had ever tasted (or attempted to taste). While we were waiting for our food, we ordered a sake to share. This never made it to the table, but successfully made its way onto our check. When we pointed the mistake out to the waiter, there was no apology whatsoever or an attempt to remedy the situation. Bottom line: we were extremely disappointed with the service and the quality of sushi at Zuma. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!

Best sushi in town
I have now visit Zuma twice and had an even better experience the second time. It has quickly surpassed other sushi restaurants as my favorite in town. Both times, there was no wait and when it is warm the patio seating is delightful. To me, the sushi if very filling and large. My personal favorite is the Trust Me Roll and I highly recommend it if you like spicy sushi. The wait staff is very courteous and will let you be. Both times I have closed the restaurant down and they were in no hurry to run us out.

This place couldn't be better! I am so glad they opened! I heart MF is the best but I have been there, and it's great, but this place is the BEST for many reasons. I liked it in the beginning when the hostesses would dress more like geishas and back away from your table like the traditional custom. Unfortunately they have gotten more relaxed. I am not sure why this place is not more crowded but it will be soon I am sure. Unfortunately. VERY romantic place. Shows style antd taste. Dress HIP, please don't ruin the vibe!!! and eat fresh and delicious sushi.

Good Sushi Restaurant
We loved the fact that this place was open late (til' 2am on Saturdays) so now we know where to go for a late-night sushi craving. The atmosphere is very sleek and romantic, with small plasma tv's lined along one of the walls as well. But it's also a good place for a group or just a single person as well. We had the miso soup, a Salmon roll, Tuna sashimi pieces, Unagi, and the Trust Me roll. The miso soup was very good and fresh tasting. The salmon roll, a great deal for $5, was excellent. A good amount of rice and fish, so pretty filling for just $5. The tuna sashimi was very fresh. The unagi pieces were excellent with larger pieces of eel than i've had elsewhere. The only thing we didn't care for was the Trust Me roll off the Chef's Special rolls side of the menu. The roll has yellowtail on the outside and tuna on the inside. The menu indicates that it will be spicy, which is OK, but it came out literally covered and drowning in the spicy orange cream sauce. The sauce was so heave and spicy that the taste and freshness of the fish was completely hidden in the heavy sauce. They need to revamp this menu item by maybe just lightly drizzling the sauce AROUND the roll but not covering it with what seemed like a ladle-full. We appreciate inventive but not over-done sushi. Overall though we really enjoyed the food and will go back!

Great Food, Great Waiters!@
sup!~ I go to this restaurant very often with my girlfriend who's from alpharetta. yes! i bring her all the way from alpharetta cuz this restaurant has the freshest sushi in town, not to mention a great server who always serves me. If you want the best food and the best service, ask for the waiter named Sean, he will give you the best service you can ever get at a restaurant. His drinks, timing of the appetizer and food is perfect and very very friendly. Oh yeah! he recommends you what's fresh daily. I often go to restaurant for 50 -food, 50- service. I give him a 50, not to mention that i tip him around 40% everytime I go there. Well, enjoy your sushi with an excellent waiter.

It only gets better
My husband and I went to Zuma around Thanksgiving and were impressed by the quality of the sushi. It was beyond fresh and exceptionally prepared. The only thing we were hesitant about returning to was the service. It wasn't bad, but just not the best. My husband and I returned again to give Zuma another try and this time everything was excellent!!!! The best rolls I have ever had. They were big and loaded with fresh, fresh fish. This is by far the best sushi.

GREAT place
I love sushi and eat it often- at shout, twist, soto, genki, etc and this is by far the best. Lots of variety and everthing was so fresh and tasty. Wine was very moderatly priced. Service is a little slow, but never rude. Just dont go there if you are in a hurry. But for a great meal and a cool atmosphere, Zuma is perfect. The back patio is so nice and the inside is modern with flat screen tvs but is not loud and obnoxious like Shout.

My Favorite Sushi in the ATL
After reading some of the early reviews I was worried that the service would be horrible but was pleasently surprised by how nice and attentive everyone was. Beyond all that, the sushi is Soooooo good. I am a spoiled sushi fan, having had some of the best in the world, and I'm telling you.. this place stands up. The tuna sashimi app. and the rolls that come with sauces are especially amazing. I highly recommend Zuma and can't wait to go back myself!

I love Zuma. In the beginning they had a bit of a issue with service - and i think that was mainly due to experience and a bit of a language barrier. But hey - at least you know it's authentically Japanese sushi. The food has always been great. Fresh - masterfully cut and beautifully presented fish. the ambiance is very cool. 15 or so flat screen TVs playing the best of Japanamation - Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, etc... Recently they've gotten their act together with service and my last few experiences have been AWESOME! Zuma is definitely the best sushi in Atlanta.

Great food but service reviews are accurate.
The majority of reviewers have talked about the bad service. Its always hard to tell because you never know when someone has an axe to grind.
After going there on an uncrowded evening, I have to agree: The service is really, really slow.
On the other hand, the quality of the sushi is excellent. The fish is very fresh and they have a great combination of traditional and trendy sushi.

i just went to eat at zuma and i thought the food was superb.
but the one thing that made me very upset is the mean, unfriendly
waitress. she had no smile on her face at all. she looked like someone
in her family just died. the owner needs to hire someone else if he
doesn't want to run out of business. i will not go back there if that same waitress is still there. i want to enjoy my meal without having a mean face who acts like somone
is holding a knife up to her throat to serve me. i give a generous
tip and i should deserve more than that. and don't order the green tea....
the waitress stuffs it up with tea leaves... it taste so bitter that it taste worst
than medicine and they charge a ridiculous $2.50 for only a tiny pot of tea.

Fresh and Delicious
I always enjoyed sushi but never like this. Every bite was delicious and fresh tasting. I always eat too much and crave their food a week later. The prices are a little steep for sushi but worth it. I cannot wait to share their food with all my friends and family. It is a great place for dates.

I've eaten here numerous times, and usually the service is slow. I kept thinking they'd work it out with time, but it's not getting much better! I was recently there with a party of five, and our dinner took 2+ hours. We waited for 20 minutes after our table was cleared and finally flagged someone down to get the check. The owner watched us lay down the credit card, but we still had to flag someone down again to settle up. It's nice to not feel rushed out of a place, but if you're sending clear "ready to leave" signals, they should respond. I also wish they would serve all of the sushi at once, instead of bringing out various plates one at a time. However, I'll keep going back because the sushi is very good. If you're not in a hurry, go for the food & sleek decor.

I decided to try a new place near the highlands area. I picked zuma because they had great business hours. Zuma stays open daily until 12:30 and weekends til 2. I work late, so That is perfect for me. I was dining alone but I had a great time the owner is not only cute, but very friendly and helpful. The waitress was very sweet, and the place was ultra sexy, yet comfy.

Great experience
This relatively new off the beaten path restaurant is outstanding. Food was great and the service was very attentive. The waitresses are almost too nice as is the owner who takes a personal interest in his customers and seeing that they are happy. He offered us a free sake which we gladly accepted. Thought the plasma t.v.'s throughout were very cool. Some of the furniture seemed a little flimsy would be my only complaint.

Awesome Ambience and Great Food!
By far the best Japanese restaurant in Atlanta. A little hidden treasure! The ambience of this restaurant is so Romantic, you can't help but fall in love with this place as soon as you walk in. Opening Zitters
Zuma had only been open a few weeks when we visited on a Friday night. The atmosphere was really cool, and it made dinner feel like a more formal affair than most sushi places. The salads weren't great, but the sushi rolls were wonderful. The spicy tuna was exceptionally good. The only real problem was service. There was no host, and the two waitresses struggled to serve the 6-8 tables that were occupied. We had to flag down our server to ask for the bill, to get water, to order drinks, and to inquire as to why we waited an hour for our food when the table next to us arrived later and had already finished and paid. All of this can be worked out over time, and I hope this place makes it. The sushi and saketinis are worth it.
